2025 Power Supply Selection Guide for Engineers(ITE)

ITE(Information Technology Equipment ) power adapters are now widely used in many devices, routers, switches, industrial control motherboards, and POS terminals. Engineers like you must want to know how to pick up a stable, useful, and qualified ITE adapter, so today, here is a guide for you.

The mandatory requirements for choosing an ITE power supply

When we talk about selecting a power supply, the very first thing must be output voltage and current, or we say Power(W). The devices we mentioned above all need a stable direct current and can’t bear any of the voltage fluctuations. So confirm the power your devices have before selecting power supplies.

Then it comes to the safety standard, in the past, the ITE power supplies went with IEC60950-1 for CB(Certification Bodies Scheme)  and EN60950-1 for TUV(Technischer Überwachungsverein) mark, now the standard has changed to IEC62368-1 and EN62368-1. Pay attention when confirming the standards; 60950-1 is out of date and cannot be used anymore.

Once you’ve determined the power rating and safety standards, the final step is to select the plug. AC and DC plugs, AC plugs determine the region where the device can be used, while DC plugs determine the usage of the device. For example, the EU plug for Europe and the US plug for America.

The image on the left shows common plug types and their corresponding regions.

DC plugs also have many types as well, and nowadays, for many of the internet technology equipment, USB Type-C output is becoming more and more popular. It is gradually replacing the traditional DC barrel connector, but for systems that require simple, stable, and always-on power delivery, the DC barrel connector remains the preferred choice.

Here in the picture are common DC connectors in the consumer electronics industry.

Just make sure what your devices are equipped with and choose a proper one.

In case you didn’t know, the most common ITE devices, such as routers and switches, usually use standard DC barrel plugs like 5.5×2.1 mm or 5.5×2.5 mm.

And if you can’t find a DC connector that could perfectly fit your device in function and appearance, Quankang supports various customizations, sizes, colors, types, and cables.

Beyond the Mandatory Requirements: Consistency, Quality, and Production Reliability

Once the electrical ratings, certifications, and connector type are confirmed, many engineers assume the power supply selection task is complete. In practice, this is where real risk starts.

Consistency is not about whether one sample works. It is about whether every unit behaves the same way today, next month, and next year. Even slight deviations during mass production can easily result in the same model exhibiting different performance characteristics, making testing extremely important.

Quankang tests every unit after mass production, for example, a 36w ITE power supply is tested for electrical performance, full-load burn-in, temperature rise, protection behavior, and safety compliance before shipment. If the adapter failed in one test, it will be reproduced to ensure high quality and reliability.

To ensure the quality, matter before or after production, Quankang built our own EMC laboratory and conducted tests even when designing.

Engineers should therefore look beyond certification files and ask different questions:

How stable is component sourcing over time?

Are there controlled change procedures for materials?

How are failure trends tracked and fed back into design improvement?

A power supply should be evaluated as a manufacturing system, not as a single electrical unit.

Conclusion:take every requirement into consideration before making a decision

For Internet technology Equipment, a stable and efficient power supply can sustain them throughout their entire lifecycle.

Just choose Quankang—a 36-year manufacturer of ITE power supply, don’t worry, you deserve the best, and that’s how we will support you.
